Heleen Meyer has been in the food industry for the past 17 years. Her career began as assistant to the food-editor for Sarie magazine, (http://www.sarie.co.za/). She then became the food specialist at AMC Classic (Pty) Ltd (http://www.amcsa.co.za) for 9 years. In 2008 she started working as a freelance food consultant and has since written two award-winning recipe books.

Onthoukos (Lapa Publishers) (cookbooks/Onthoukos) was published in 2008 and is a treasure chest of South African’s favourite childhood dishes, just like ouma used to make it. It was translated into English in 2010, with the title, Food from the heart (cookbooks/food-from-the-heart). In 2009 Kos is op die tafel! (Lapa Publishers) (cookbooks/Kos-is-op-die-tafel!)was published and is a collection of easy family recipes.

In her latest recipe book, Make five/Maak vyf (Human&Rousseau) (cookbooks/maak-vyf-make-five/) she shares a variety of everyday ingredients, each prepared in five delectable and interesting ways. Heleen also inspires others to live and cook in a ‘greener’ way so that the environment is also taken into consideration. Read the regular blogs on her website or follow her on social media.

Heleen’s passion for good, honest cooking goes further than just another plate of food. This has been the focus of all her work, whether doing a cooking demonstration, writing an article, judging a competition or cooking and doing food styling for photography.

She has done recipe development and food styling for corporate clients like Heinz Foods, Golden Cloud, Pork Producers of SA and some wine estates. Heleen’s attention to detail often leads her to form part of the production team for recipe books. She has experience in doing talks and presentations, taking part in radio inserts and interviews as well as television programmes. Her hands-on, practical approach is a strong focus in her work. Heleen’s easy-to-cook recipes appeal to a wide range of people and she encourages and inspires others to cook their own delicious food. Look out for Heleen’s regular articles in The Muse, the Pinelands Community Magazine, in Cape Town, as well as the Business Women’s Association’s newsletter. She also appeared on RSG (Radio Sonder Grense) in a popular insert about ‘living green from your kitchen’ for four years. She has also been asked to be the brand ambassador for AMC Classic (Pty) Ltd.

As a mother of two, Heleen understands the importance of a wholesome, well-balanced diet. She also believes in having a healthy relationship and positive association with food. Her food motto is ‘moderation in everything’. This way you never have to deprive yourself of any of the good stuff in life.
